Med Boreal Baffin har du en leken, rask og veldig morsom kajakk…

En velegnet kajakk både for nybegynnere og de som har mye erfaring

Denne kajakken spenner bredt.

Skeg Sea Kayaks

Boréal Design kayaks are built with the utmost respect for quality and workmanship. Our design is tried, tested and true for a day trip in your local bay or a month long expedition to a series of remote islands.

Simple and elegant, Boréal Design models all have a distinctive feel that blends the traditional aesthetics with functionality and performance of a modern sea kayak.

Why choose a kayak with a skeg?

A skeg equipped kayak will not turn the boat for you.  Mastering the use of a skeg requires patience and practice in various water conditions.  This is why a skeg equipped sea kayak is generally considered for more advanced paddlers. A paddler starting out in sea kayaking needs to have confidence in their edging and paddle stroke abilities to properly steer a skeg.

By comparison, the use of the skeg is more passive than the rudder. You need to deploy the skeg and its effect will change how your boat will behave in the water while you paddle. Its greatest use is to modify how your kayak will turn when a strong side wind arises. Lower your skeg just right and you will keep your perfect line for miles.

A skeg equipped kayak has a hull design made to match.  It is highly maneuverable and stable while edging.

Boreal Design Baffin Kayak Review:

Sporty and stable touring kayak

WRITTEN BY tim shuffTIM SHUFF

A review of the Boreal Design Baffin touring kayak from Adventure Kayak magazine.

In 2009, BoréalDesign introduced its multipurpose touring kayak, the Epsilon, in three sizes to accommodate paddlers from 90 to 280 pounds. This follows a smart trend in kayak marketing to de-clutter the purchase decision by replacing a dog’s breakfast of models with a simple flow: 1) choose a design that suits your paddling style; 2) choose a size; 3) choose from poly or composite. Brilliantly easy, like buying shoes, retailers and customers loved it.

The Baffin first came on the scene in 2008 as a plastic version of the popular Greenland- style Ellesmere and ran away as Boréal’s top seller. So, with the success of the three-size system of the Epsilon, it only made sense to add a larger and smaller version to the Baffin’s 2011 redesign, and to also offer it in composite.

So if you like the Baffin, Boréal has your size and material. Now back to Step 1: Is the Baffin for you?

If you like a snug-fitting, sporty, close-to- the-water feel; if you like hard chines that let you use super-subtle edging to steer; if you like skin-on-frame-inspired lines that grace- fully accommodate low-angle, Greenland-style strokes and laybacks, then the answer is yes.

I tested the smallest size, P1 (“P” for plastic). I found the initial stability to be comfortably moderate yet it took no effort at all to edge the trademark, down-curving “reverse hard chine,” which carves like a shaped ski, only in the opposite direction.

With high secondary stability and predictable edging, the Baffin has the even-tempered personality you want in a foul-weather friend—a solid blend of soft-chine predict- ability and hard-chine turning characteristics.

The Baffin P1 has a long, flat keel with low rocker—perhaps to give its shorter hull a speed boost. It tracks surprisingly well, yet it’s easy enough to steer by throwing in some of the effortless edging while carrying speed. Or dial up the skeg for rough weather and you’re on rails. These are perfect sporty touring traits.

This brings us to Step 2: Fit. This is a low- volume boat so pack accordingly. The cockpit has enough length for just about any paddler within the P1’s weight range and a slim fit that’s fantastic for boat control—aided by an aggressively contoured bucket seat, adjust- able thigh braces and sturdy metal foot braces. Stand warned that the streamlined decks strictly limit capacity.

Boréal rightly pegs the Baffin as “an extremely fun and stable kayak for athletic paddlers from intermediate to advanced, suited for day and weekend trips.” And now with more sizes, Boréal’s sprightly bestseller will have an even bigger (and smaller) audience.

SOFT AND DRY

Hatch covers are wickedly supple and the easiest we’ve found to get on and off, while also being dry thanks to the fit of the hard plastic hatch rims.

DIAL 5 FOR OVERDRIVE

We love the smooth, precise operation and bomber spectra-cord construction of Boréal’s signature dial skeg, placed up front for easy reach and neatly recessed into the deck.

KEEP A LOW PROFILE

The Baffin’s low-slung, beautifully streamlined decks are perfect for Greenland-style strokes, rolls and braces, if a bit wet in rough conditions.

The new Baffin, a Kayak without compromise

Skrevet av: Thierry Frankel

Founded nearly 20 years ago by a pair of engineers and outdoor enthusiasts, BOREALDESIGN is a leader in the sea kayak and hiking markets. In fact, the Quebec company has earned an enviable reputation as one of the most innovative designers and manufacturers in the world.

New for 2011: The Baffin line
This Greenland-style kayak is meant for intermediate-to-expert level paddlers. It features a retractable skeg, thigh braces, a backband seat, and three storage hatches.

The shape of its hull blends a reverse hard chine with a semi-arched shape, technology unique to BOREALDESIGN. This gives the Baffin superior manoeuvrability without sacrificing speed.

It’s available in three sizes (100-200-300) and four types of material – fibreglass, Kevlar, carbon composites, or rotomolded polyethylene. Essentially, there’s a Baffin to suit the needs of any paddler.

The reverse hard chine
The reverse hard chine is exclusive to BOREALDESIGN. Chines like this provide kayaks with exceptional secondary stability. With flat surfaces, this kind of hull profile has greater surface contact with the water. The traditional V-shape hull is replaced by a semi-arched profile, improving the kayak’s performance during the lean and optimizing its hydrodynamics. The Baffin retains all its speed and manoeuvrability.

The retractable skeg
The new skeg system has a simple and effective mechanism. Along the starboard washboard is a control dial that adjusts the depth of the anodized aluminum blade. This dial is linked to the skeg by a Spectra line sheathed by a nylon tube that runs inside the kayak. A brass fitting ensures the end of the nylon tube near the skeg is waterproof. The skeg’s weight pulls it down and a bungee cord adjusts how far it drops when the control dial is turned. The dial goes from 0 to 5, representing 0 to 50 degrees. The skeg blade’s storage box was designed to offer the most storage space possible in the rear hatch. No need for hard-to-replace stainless steel cables or hard-to-reach delicate pieces.

The thigh braces
The thigh braces promote better posture and kayak control during manoeuvres. They’re installed on all of our composite Baffin models, but BOREALDESIGN has also developed a thigh-brace system for polyethylene Baffins. Composed of three sections of minicell foam, they provide remarkable comfort and adjustability.

The backband seat
This moulded seat is distinctive. Its contoured form improves your position, increasing comfort and allowing for improved command of the craft in terms of lean and control. A flatter seat is available as a custom option.

The position and shape of the backrest provides lumbar support. Since it is adjusted from behind by means of a strap, it can be hard to adjust once you’re in the boat. Paddlers should think ahead and adjust it before setting out.

Build quality and finish
Composites: overlapping areas (hull-deck joints) are bonded. The interior seam is then sealed with fibreglass tape, and finally the exterior seam is sealed with finishing tape. It is then coated with resin for strength and visual appeal. Bulkheads are manufactured, installed and sealed with fibreglass, improving the kayak’s structural integrity. Kevlar or carbon composite kayaks may be ordered with a clear-coat finish. This is a clear gel coating that, aside from reducing weight, lets you appreciate the beautiful fabrics.

Polyethylene: Highly-polished moulds give our kayaks an unrivalled sheen. They’re assembled with the same quality components as the composite kayaks. Bulkheads are bonded and then sealed.

Baffin kayaks come with a life-line attached to the perimeter, using a cord with a reflective strip that improves the craft’s visibility. Hatch covers are 100% rubber. Kyaks also come with a special space for you to mount a compass.
